Can anyone use a Spire Healthcare hospital?

Anyone can attend a Spire Healthcare hospital for treatment, but you may need a letter of referral from your GP.

See our guide on how to obtain a GP referral
If you have private medical insurance see our tips for insured patients
If you don't have private medical insurance and would like to pay for your own treatment, find out about having treatment as a self-pay patient
If you think you may be eligible for treatment funded by the National Health Service, see our page about having treatment as an NHS patient

How do I arrange a referral to a Spire Healthcare hospital?

You will need to visit your GP, who can refer you to a consultant who practices at your local Spire Healthcare hospital. Your GP will write a letter of referral and then either you or your GP can contact us to arrange your first out-patient appointment.

In some instances, we may be able to arrange a GP referral for you. Simply contact your local Spire Healthcare

hospital and ask for details. For cosmetic surgery and some self-pay treatments, a GP referral is not normally needed and you can simply call us to make an appointment.

How can I find out about the consultant I'm going to see?

The "Locate a consultant" search on this website carries details of about 3,500 consultants who treat patients in Spire Healthcare hospitals. Each consultant's profile shows qualifications, year of qualifying, special interests and expertise, and many contain additional background information and a photograph.
Use the consultant search to find a consultant by name, or to search by clinical specialty or hospital
To find out about a consultant whose name does not appear, please contact your local Spire Healthcare hospital
You can also check a doctor's qualifications, registration and specialist accreditation on the General Medical Council website, www.gmc-uk.org

What do I need to do to ensure my insurance company settles the account?

We want everything to go as smoothly as possible for you. We'll try to minimise the amount of paperwork and, where possible, we will arrange for your insurer to settle your hospital bill direct with us.

Useful tips:

  • Contact your insurance company and check that you are covered for the planned treatment, including your first out-patient appointment. If you do not have a claim form or authorisation letter, ask your insurance company to send one to you.
  • Bring your claim form or authorisation letter with you when you attend your first out-patient appointment.
  • If you are being admitted for in-patient or day-case treatment, please hand your claim form to the patient administrator so that we may arrange for the medical section to be completed by your consultant.
  • Make sure you have completed and signed the "patient/member" section on the claim form.
  • Tell the patient administrator if your treatment has been pre-authorised by your insurer, or if your claim form is already with your consultant, GP or insurance company.
  • Normally, we will send your hospital bill and completed claim form to your insurance company for settlement. Please inform the ward receptionist if you would like your hospital bill or claim form to be sent to you at home or to a third party.
  • If you receive any bills from your consultant or anaesthetist that relate to your current treatment, please forward them to the hospital's accounts department. We will then forward these to your insurance company for settlement.
  • If you have instructed your insurance company to settle your bill direct, they will pay the hospital and consultants on your behalf. They will also inform you if you need to pay any insurance excess or shortfall.

Please see our private health insurance companies page for contact details of some major insurers.
