Fertility treatment success rates

IVF Scotland opened in Spring 2010 at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital. As such, we do not have success rates for live births and our statistics are also not yet held by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). For further information about our clinic please visit www.hfea.gov.uk

We do however have success rates based on IVF ICSI clinical pregnancy rates. A clinical pregnancy is where a fetal heartbeat is seen on ultrasound scan, around 5-6 weeks after the IVF procedure.

Vasectomy reversal success rates

Consultant Urologist Mr Roland Donat performs vasectomy reversal at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals. This service may be required or requested by patients wishing to undergo fertility treatment at IVF Scotland who have had a vasectomy. The following success rates reflect Mr Donat's practice at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Edinburgh, over the last four years. (Data based on total of 85 patients with semen analysis outcomes available for 72, data drawn on 7th Nov 2010).

Years after vasectomy

Patient number Post-operative patency

Patency percentage (%)

1-3 8 8 100
4-6 20 18 90
7-9 18 15 83
10-12 12 11 92
13-15 8 7 87.5
16-18 3 3
>19 3 1
Total 72 63 87.5

Patency rates reflect the number of patients with sperm reappearing in the seminal fluid following vasectomy reversal. Patency rates are generally higher than pregnancy rates (by 20% or more, depending on the age of the female partner and the quality of the sperm). Mr Donat does not have information on subsequent pregnancy rates as patients are discharged back to their general practitioner following successful vasectomy reversal.
