Lipomodeling, or autologous fat transfer, is a new treatment available for the correction of volume, shape or contour defects of the breast.
Fat is removed from the tummy or thighs using liposuction. It is spun in a centrifuge in the operating theatre to remove any blood or dead cells and the remaining fat is then transferred into the breast through small needles to obtain the desired adjustment. Unlike a breast implant, the fat can be injected into the particular area where it is needed and the breast shape can be recreated in this way. The operation takes only about an hour and a half and many patients go home the same day.
Some patients have had lipomodeling planned into their breast reconstruction from the start, enabling them to have a reconstruction without an implant. Others have been referred to Hull from other hospitals following complications after reconstruction and for many of these ladies the only other option is a further major reconstructive procedure, with the possibility of further complications.
About a third of the patients have previously had lumpectomies for breast cancer and have been left with a dent, defect or volume asymmetry. Prior to the advent of lipomodeling there was very little to offer these ladies, so for this group in particular this is a real breakthrough. For many of these women the scarring and deformity in their breast is a constant reminder of the fact that they have had breast cancer, and correcting this has real benefits in terms of body image and self confidence. In the future, it should be possible, with cosmetic scar placement and lipomodeling, to leave a completely normal looking breast, with little sign of the cancer surgery having been done.
A small number of ladies have had lipomodeling to correct congenital asymmetry or defects after removal of benign lumps.
The operations have been extremely successful. Around a third to a half of the transferred fat will normally be reabsorbed by the body, so a proportion of patients will require more than one treatment session, but these have been no complications to date, and patients are generally very accepting of further procedures.

Although the results of liposculpture tend to last longer than some temporary synthetic fillers, it is not a permanent treatment and the fat will gradually be reabsorbed into the body over time. Liposculpture may also be used in conjunction with other treatments such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels to treat severe facial wrinkles.
