Gastric bypass surgery at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital

We provide comprehensive private hospital care for our patients across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. You have a choice of bariatric surgeons (consultants specialising in weight loss surgery) who perform gastric bypass surgery to help you lose weight when diet and exercise haven’t worked. Your consultant will work alongside a dietitian and bariatric nurses to ensure you get the right treatment and aftercare.

Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital is just a couple of minutes’ drive from the Humber Bridge and 15 minutes from Hull city centre. Public transport options are available. Hospital parking is free for you and your visitors.

Consultations

Your first appointment with your consultant will be in one of our 17 consulting rooms. You’ll have a chance to talk about your medical history and the different options for surgery. There’ll be time for any questions you may have and an opportunity to discuss:

• The procedure and what’s involved - your surgeon may recommend gastric sleeve surgery as a first step
• The treatment costs and what’s included
• Risks and complications, including the anaesthetic
• Your personalised aftercare plan and what this involves, including diet and lifestyle changes

Before going ahead with gastric bypass surgery, you’ll meet a dietitian so they can make further assessments on whether surgery is right for you.

You’ll also need to have a pre-operative assessment which may include:

• An electrocardiogram (ECG)
• Blood tests
• Blood pressure
• MRSA swabs
• Oxygen levels
• Pulse
• Temperature

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for around two to three days. You’ll stay in one of our large, bright, private en-suite rooms. All our rooms have the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find at home, including:

• TV with Freeview
• En-suite
• Window
• Armchair

Here’s what will happen on the day of your gastric bypass:

• You’ll meet your surgical team and anaesthetist
• Your anaesthetist will administer the general anaesthetic, which will send you to sleep for the operation
• Once it’s taken effect, your surgeon will carry out the surgery to reduce the size of your stomach and connect it to the lower part of your small intestine
• Your operation will take between one and three hours

During your stay, you’ll be given painkillers for any discomfort. Your nursing team will make sure you have everything you need at all times.

We’ll have follow-up appointments with you after you leave hospital. These will be regularly for two years after your surgery, so we can check your progress and recovery. You'll have a pre-operative dietitian appointment and then follow-up appointments at four weeks, 12 weeks and one 'floating appointment' for you to use after this time when needed.
