What is the Breast Health Risk Assessment?
The Breast Health Risk Assessment comprises the following components:
- Information video to aid decision making
- Lifestyle and family history assessment (Tyrer-Cuzick)
- deCODE BreastCancer™ genetic test based on a mouth swab
- Presentation of combined results as individual score in a face-to-face consultation with a breast surgeon
- Personalised breast screening programme
The Tyrer-Cuzick lifestyle and family history assessment is a risk estimation model which estimates the risk of breast cancer in healthy women. The model considers family history and life style, as well as a number of other clinical factors, such as a woman’s menarche (age at first period) and whether she has children.
The deCODE BreastCancer™ genetic test is a laboratory test carried out on a sample of a patient’s DNA collected via a mouth swab, looking for seven common genetic factors shown to contribute to a large proportion of female breast cancers.
How do I take the Breast Health Risk Assessment?
BreastHealth UK will provide access to the Tyrer-Cuzick questions. You will also receive a box through the post with a DNA collection tool kit and instructions for how to obtain a mouth swab. Once the test has been sent to, and returned by the laboratory, and the questionnaire completed, you will have a consultation arranged with a Breast Surgeon to discuss your results.
How much does the Breast Health Risk Assessment cost?
The price may vary from between hospitals but is approximately £550 (incl. VAT).
How long will it take to get the result?
Approximately 4 weeks after mailing the mouth swab sample to BreastHealth UK, a consultation with a breast surgeon will be arranged to explain your results and options for a personalised breast screening programme.
