    Professional profile:
    Dr Tsai qualified from Aberdeen University (MB ChB 1983) and worked as a junior doctor in Aberdeen and Glasgow hospitals before taking up a research appointment in Liverpool University. He submitted a doctoral thesis on inflammatory bowel disease which was awarded honours (MD 1991). A further spell of clinical training as senior registrar in Liverpool followed and he was appointed Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Castle Hill hospital (Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust) in 1993. He has an interest in all aspects of clinical gastroenterology and hepatology and expertise in endoscopic procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. He has published over 80 papers, several chapters in books, and a textbook of gastroenterology. He was elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998 and also a fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology.Appropriate referrals include patients with abdominal pains,indigestion,nausea,vomiting, jaundice,diarrhoea or constipation,bleeding or changes in the bowel. Referrals may only be made through the general practitioner.     Personal profile:
    He is a keen mountaineer and skier. He has climbed all the Scottish "Munroes" and many of the highest Alpine peaks including the Materhorn and Mont Blanc.He loves music and opera and plays the saxophone badly and may be found on a squeaky top end of a viol quartet. He sings with the Hull Bach Choir. He lives in Beverley and is a member of the Beverley Minster congregation.
