Physiotherapy for back and neck pain

Back pain

Lower back pain is an extremely common symptom. It is estimated that up to 70% of the population will suffer from lower back pain at some time in their life. Private physiotherapy treatment at Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood, Essex will include treatment that may help to reduce pain, restore function and reduce the likelihood of the pain recurring.

Treatment is tailored to meet your own individual needs

Injury to the intervertebral disks and the apophyseal joints are common causes of low back pain. Intervertebral disks are often injured when the patient is lifting a heavy object in a bent and rotated position. A disk prolapse occurs when the contents of the disk push out through a defect in the disk wall.

Sciatic pain is also linked to the disks of the lower spine. Sciatic pain usually occurs when the disc prolapse presses on the sciatic nerve. Patients with a disk prolapse typically suffer with acute low back and/or leg pain following a relatively trivial movement usually involving bending forward.

Neck pain

Neck pain is an extremely common condition and there are many recognisable symptoms associated with it. Acute wry neck pain or torticolis is another common injury which can be extremely painful. It is characterised by sudden onset of sharp neck pain with limitation of movement. It occurs either after a sudden quick movement or on waking.

Neck pain is often associated with headaches and pain can also be referred to the shoulder and arm when the nerve root is impinged or trapped. Acute nerve root pain is characterised by moderate to severe arm pain, possibly including pins and needles.

Whiplash injuries occur when an unexpected force causes the head to move forward rapidly and then back, resulting in soft tissue damage, including the muscles and ligaments. Early intervention and advice are very important in aiding full recovery.

Treatment of all neck conditions is tailored to meet your own individual needs. This may include mobilisation and manipulation of the joints in the neck; stretching and strengthening of the muscles; massage to tight muscles in the neck and shoulders and postural retraining.
