Mr Christopher Welch is a consultant gynaecologist at Spire Hartswood private hospital in Brentwood, Essex, offering private gynaecology surgery in our clean and comfortable private hospital.
Mr Christopher Welch has a large private gynaecology practice caring for women from Basildon, Upminster, Brentwood, Billericay and other parts of Essex. He has been engaged in private practice since 1986 and, at Spire Hartswood Hospital, he specialises in gynaecological problems relating to abnormal cervical smear tests, endometriosis, stress incontinence and the menopause. Mr Welch aims to provide a personal and holistic approach to all his patients.
Christopher Welch qualified from Manchester University Medical School in 1973. He trained at the Hammersmith Hospital in London and at Nottingham University where he was a Clinical Lecturer. He worked for a year as a clinical tutor to the prestigious Military Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to teach the medical staff and students obstetrics and gynaecology.
In 1986 Mr Welch was appointed as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to Basildon and Orsett Hospitals and has been active in developing services for women’s health in Essex over many years.
Mr Welch set up the local colposcopy service for the investigation and treatment of women who have had an abnormal cervical smear test result, and he introduced the use of laser treatment in 1987. He is an accredited colposcopist with the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. He is a member of the cervical cancer team at Basildon.
Mr Welch introduced the use of hysteroscopy and endometrial resection in 1990, as well as laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for hysterectomy and other gynaecological operations. He is an accredited interventional laparoscopic surgeon for major procedures and introduced the “harmonic scalpel” to Basildon in 1994. This is now a standard tool for use in all types of surgical practice. Christopher Welch has lectured and toured abroad to demonstrate the harmonic scalpel to gynaecologists and surgeons in Europe and the Middle East.
Since 2003 Mr Welch has run the only registered endometriosis clinic in Essex. He sees all patients personally with the assistance of two specialist endometriosis nurses, who help provide a completely holistic approach to management and treatment of this potentially damaging disease. A support group has been established for women to meet and share experiences.
Mr Welch is currently the senior medical manager in charge of Maternity and Children’s Services at Basildon University Hospital as well as being an Associate Medical Director.
In 2004 Mr Welch completed a Post Graduate Certificate in NHS Claims and Clinical Risk Management at the University of the West of England.
