Background Information
Professional profile:

Dr Simon Thomson is a consultant in pain management at Spire Hartswood private hospital in Brentwood, Essex, offering private pain treatment in our clean and comfortable private hospital.

I was appointed as a consultant in anaesthesia and pain management services at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in October 1992 and started private practice in pain management in 1993. I hold a particular interest in multidisciplinary pain management, integrated back care services and interventional pain management, including neuromodulation for advanced pain management.

I have been active in promoting pain management and have published several articles and lectures on related topics.

I was European Federation of IASP Chapters Task Force Member on the European Consensus on Neuromodulation for Pain that was launched at the European Parliament on 4th November 1998.

I am a founder member of the UK Guideline Group on the Management of Refractory Angina, founder member of the special interest groups of the UK Pain Society for Neuromodulation and Refractory Angina, President of the UK and Ireland Chapter of the International Neuromodulation Society and Secretary of the Global International Neuromodulation Society.

My current research interests include a multicentre European study of outcomes following spinal cord stimulation in selected patients with peripheral vascular disease.

I am a faculty member of the European Continuing Medical Training and am Medical Director of hospital-based workshops on the selection, implant technique and management of implantable neuromodulation devices for persistent pain.
