Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood prides itself on being able to offer the best possible private healthcare within the local community, and when a member of staff goes beyond the call of duty, they recognise that reward is due.
Alex Edghill, Clinical Nurse Manager, recently received a Spire Healthcare national ‘Inspire Award’, following her outstanding care for patients with breast cancer.
Alex has been caring for patients for over 25 years and recently received the award after receiving glowing praise from a breast cancer patient. The patient, who wished to remain anonymous, praised the exceptional treatment from all the staff, and singled out Alex as it was felt that they owed so much for her help and guidance through such a traumatic time.
Alex was commended for her support being, “Far beyond my ability to describe in words, I even have her home phone number in case of need” and the quality of her team’s support being attributed to her, “Training and leadership – she is a star amongst stars”.
Garry Court, Head of Clinical Services, commented, “Alex has devoted her working career to developing breast and cancer awareness locally. Initially working at Orsett Hospital as a breast care nurse, she quickly developed a desire to work more closely with patients and their families and became one of the first hospital-based Marie Curie nurses, looking after patients from Basildon and surrounding areas. During the late 80's and early 90's, she helped create a comprehensive care package spanning all stages of breast cancer treatment.
In 2004, Alex was appointed as Breast Care Nurse Specialist at Spire Hartswood Hospital. Alex continues to tirelessly raise awareness through staff training and her involvement with local business and schools.
“Alex is a key player in the hospital’s breast cancer service, and it is through Alex and her team’s dedication that we are able to maintain our high standards of overall patient satisfaction” said Mr Court.
Recent patient satisfaction results that found over 90% of patients at Spire Hartswood Hospital rated the ‘care and attention of nurses’ and the ‘quality of service from consultants as excellent or very good.
As well as diagnostic services and surgical care, the hospital provides day care chemotherapy and ongoing support to patients and is proud to be a BUPA-approved breast care unit.
