Spire Hartswood Hospital has made its third major capital investment in three years by installing a new Sterile Services Department (SSD). The SSD, which cost nearly one million pounds to build, enables the hospital to wash, disinfect and sterilise all of its operating theatre instruments on site to the latest regulatory standards.

Each year, over 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Early detection and ready access to diagnostic facilities are helping to increase survival rates, but better awareness is needed in order to encourage men to actively seek help. To this end, Spire Hartswood Hospital is supporting Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in March by urging men to seek help, rather than suffer in silence.

Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood has been awarded a rating of ‘very good’ through the Food Standards Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating System launched this week. The scheme adopted by Brentwood Borough Council, shows consumers which businesses in the local area are providing the best standards of hygiene, structure and food safety management. It is similar to ‘scores on the doors’ systems which operates in several London Boroughs.

Consultants and staff at Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood celebrated the opening of the hospital’s first Computed Tomography (CT) scanner on 13 May. The new Toshiba Aquilion 64-slice scanner can scan the entire heart in just 12 seconds.

Mr George Fayad, consultant ENT surgeon, performed the first private nose implant at Hartswood in January 2010. He is the first consultant in the UK to offer this procedure.
