Key facts about prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK; each year around 36,000 men are diagnosed with the disease.
The strongest risk factor for prostate cancer is age. Men below 50 years are at low risk and risk increases over the age of 50. More than half of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in men aged over 70 years.
The starting point for diagnosing prostate cancer is the PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test. This screening test has led to the diagnosis of many prostate cancers which would have gone undetected and therefore untreated. Now, three in every four men diagnosed with prostate cancer will survive beyond five years. (Source of statistics: Cancer Research UK)
