Express Prostate Assessment

Early screening and diagnosis is important for the successful treatment of prostate cancer, and to ensure the best possible outcome.

You’ll have fast access to diagnostic tests and, where needed, a prostate biopsy with next-day results.

The Express Prostate Assessment at Spire Hartswood Hospital is for men who have concerns about prostate disease, whether or not they have any symptoms. You’ll have fast access to diagnostic tests and, where needed, a prostate biopsy with next-day results.

Any man diagnosed with prostate cancer at Spire Hartswood Hospital will be offered treatment choices, including non-surgical options, and plenty of time to discuss these with their consultant urologist and urology nurse practitioner.

Coming for a PSA test does not commit you to further tests or treatment with us. If you already know you have a raised PSA level, we can book you in straight away for an Express Prostate Assessment and, if you can bring your PSA test results with you, we won’t need to repeat the test.

For insured and self-pay patients
Our Express Prostate Assessment service is available to self-pay patients and those with private medical insurance. However, private medical insurers will not normally fund the initial PSA test or first urology nurse appointment.

If you are a self-paying patient, you don’t need a referral from your GP, provided you have booked an appointment to discuss your PSA test results with a urology nurse practitioner or consultant urologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital.

Express Prostate Assessment – what’s involved

Step 1 Telephone discussion (free of charge) with urology nurse practitioner to enable patient to make an informed choice about going forward with prostate assessment
Step 2 PSA blood test with results in 48 hours
not needed if you already have recent PSA test results
Step 3

Urology nurse practitioner appointment including bladder scan and urine flow rate
OR
Consultant urologist appointment, digital rectal examination, bladder scan, urine flow rate and recommendation on whether prostate biopsy is needed.
Type of appointment will depend on PSA test results and patient preference.

Step 4 If recommended by consultant:
Prostate biopsy including 12 tissue samples. This is carried out as a day care procedure, usually under local anaesthetic and sedation. 
Next-day appointment with consultant and urology nurse practitioner to receive your biopsy results. This will include initial discussion of treatment options if prostate cancer has been diagnosed. If your biopsy results are negative, your consultant will give you recommendations for future follow-up.
