If you suffer from aching legs or are unhappy about the appearance of varicose veins then you are not alone. Up to 40% of women and 25% of men will be affected at some time in their life. Contributing factors include pregnancy, sedentary professions, obesity and age. Spire Hartswood Hospital now offers endovenous laser treatment (ELT), a minimally invasive procedure to treat varicose veins.
What is Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT)?
ELT, sometimes referred to as EVLT, is a quick, minimally invasive procedure which closes the varicose vein with minimal scarring. At Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood this procedure is performed under local or general anaesthetic and you won't have to stay overnight.
After ELT you can expect to resume normal activities immediately after leaving hospital and most patients are back to work within a day or two.
Suitability for treatment
Not everyone with varicose veins is suitable for ELT. To find out whether ELT would be an effective treatment for your varicose veins, you'll need to have a consultation with a consultant vascular surgeon and a vascular ultrasound (doppler) scan of your leg(s). If ELT is not likely to be effective, your surgeon will discuss other options including surgical treatment.
