One in 2 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will break a bone, mainly because of osteoporosis, with the condition costing the government £2.3 billion a year – a massive £6 million a day.
“It’s important that women in particular are aware of the risk factors for osteoporosis"
Dr Christopher Kelsey
Consultant Rheumatologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital.
Osteoporosis, often known as “brittle bone disease” literally means porous bones. It occurs when the structure within the bones becomes too thin. This then causes the bones to become fragile and more likely to break, even after a minor bump or fall. Osteoporosis doesn’t just affect limbs but can affect the hips and spine as well.
For women, bone density peaks in the mid 20’s and then starts to gradually decline until the menopause when the decline accelerates. A well balanced, calcium-rich diet can help to optimise bone strength, along with avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Regular weight-bearing exercise, such as brisk walking, jogging, dancing, weight-training, tennis and aerobics can also be beneficial.
Osteoporosis can be detected using a DEXA scanner to measure the bone density in your hip and spine, relative to the average for your age and gender. It is a simple and painless procedure that uses very low doses of X-ray. The greater the reduction in bone density, the higher your risk of a broken bone. If you are found to be at risk, medical treatment and lifestyle changes can be recommended to slow and even recover some of the loss of bone density.
“It’s important that women in particular are aware of the risk factors for osteoporosis so that they can be assessed and can take early action if necessary,” said Dr Christopher Kelsey, Consultant Rheumatologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital. “Risk factors include family history, early menopause, steroid treatment, certain medical conditions (for example, rheumatoid arthritis) and lifestyle factors including heavy smoking, high alcohol intake and lack of exercise,” explained Dr Kelsey, who is a Scientific Member of National Osteoporosis Society.
Spire Hartswood Hospital is able offer a price of £130 for men and women who wish to refer themselves for a DEXA scan. Please call 01277 266 761 or enquire online for further information or to make an appointment.
