Physiotherapy at Spire Harpenden Hospital

Our aim at the Spire Harpenden Hospital Physiotherapy Department is to provide a high standard of care and rehabilitation in order to aid your recovery from injury or surgery.

Our Hospital Consultants are leaders in their chosen fields - both privately and within the NHS.

Physiotherapy

Our highly skilled specialist physiotherapists are HPC and CSP registered and offer a wealth of clinical experience and expertise in all fields of physiotherapy. We use evidence-based techniques and provide individual, tailored programmes specific to each person’s needs and requirements.

Physiotherapy uses a wide range of physical treatments such as exercise and manipulation to facilitate movement and function in the body and is useful in the treatment of recent acute injuries, as well as long term, more chronic conditions.

We work closely with all of our Hospital Consultants, who are leaders in their chosen fields - both privately and within the NHS, in most cases. Should the need occur, or we feel that further investigations are necessary for a patient; we will gladly refer you to an appropriate Consultant for a more specialised opinion.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is an innovative rehabilitation service, rarely available in most physiotherapy centres. Hydrotherapy can improve mobility and power - as the water can either provide buoyancy and assistance, or resistance – in order to strengthen muscles. The support and warmth of the water often gives a feeling of security, which enables the individual to achieve more than is normally possible on dry land (in the early stages of rehabilitation).

Isokinetic/Cybex therapy

Isokinetic dynamometry is a high-tech, computerised machine-assisted technique which challenges your muscles by using different resistances. It can be used to accurately measure strength of individual muscle groups and provides feedback on areas of weakness or abnormality in joints. The Cybex device can also be used to exercise muscles and increase strength and endurance, enabling you to return to normal activities or sport.

We are also able to provide printed results informing you of the outcome of your treatment, to remind you of the areas of weakness and how they have progressed with treatment. This is an invaluable service for both athletes and injured individuals.

Continence care

The Specialist continence physiotherapists at Spire Harpenden Hospital work with both men and women, using the Neurotrac ETS EMG Biofeedback system. This system allows diagnosis and treatment of both urinary and faecal incontinence - and pelvic floor dysfunction - using visual and audio biofeedback through both a PC and EMG triggered stimulation.

Hand therapy

Spire Harpenden Hospital has a fully qualified hand therapy specialist physiotherapist who will work closely with your consultant/doctor in order to offer you a seamless service.

We are able to offer you a comprehensive individualised treatment programme for all hand and wrist conditions in order to restore maximum functional recovery. Conditions such as sprains/ strains, fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, unexplained hand pain, post surgical treatment (which may or may not involve custom made splints) are all included, alongside many others. All conditions will be explained fully to clients; in order to give you a greater understanding of the diagnosis and treatments options - thus enabling you to return to your former activity level as quickly as possible.
