What's involved?
Ovarian cysts are fluid filled pockets within or on the surface of an ovary. Your ovaries are located on either side of your womb. Most cysts are harmless and don’t cause any pain or discomfort, however some cysts cause serious symptoms.
There are two main types of ovarian cyst operation – open cystectomy and laparoscopic (“keyhole”) cystectomy. In open cystectomy, an incision is is made either horizontally just above the pubic bone (along the top of the bikini line) or vertically from just below the belly button. The ovary is opened and the cyst is lifted out. In laparoscopic cystectomy, smaller incisions are made and the cysts are removed using specially designed surgical instruments.
