Stephen Burrell was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Luton & Dunstable Hospital in 2000. He trained in London at Queen Charlottes and UCH.

Stephen was the sub-specialty trainee in fetal medicine at University College Hospital and was awarded the advanced diploma in obstetric ultrasound. He obtained both MRCP and MRCOG and developed his skills in fetal medicine. He runs a high quality nuchal scanning service at Spire Harpenden Hospital and provides CVS or amniocentesis if indicated.

In gynaecology, Stephen has special interests in heavy periods and pelvic pain and has specific skills in keyhole surgery. He offers conservative treatments for heavy periods as well as the latest advances in endometrial ablation. He performs hysterectomy (abdominal or vaginal) when other options are not suitable.

Stephen says “I have a particular interest in the management of endometriosis which causes pain and sub fertility. Laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) provides a definitive diagnosis, allows laser treatment thereby relieving symptoms. The benefits of laparoscopic treatment are faster recovery and return to normal activities. It is very rewarding seeing women who have benefited from such surgery”.

He also has skills in ultrasound scanning, performing both gynaecology and pregnancy scans.

Stephen has lectured at scientific meetings in the UK and abroad and has been appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.

Stephen lives in Harpenden with his wife, three young children and a Tonkinese cat. His wife runs a complementary health clinic in St Albans. Together they enjoy tennis, socialising with friends and discovering new restaurants.

His ultimate passions are for windsurfing and skiing despite the number of times he seems to fall over! He enjoys the challenge of teaching these sports to his children.
