Professional profile:
I qualified in 1981 following undergraduate training at Cambridge University and the Middlesex Hospital, London, and gained much of my surgical experience at the Royal Free Hospital, London.

In 1992 I was awarded the degree of Master of Surgery from Cambridge University for my thesis on the treatment of liver tumours. In 1994 I was appointed Consultant Surgeon to the Luton & Dunstable and BUPA Harpenden Hospitals and in 2006 I moved to The Royal Free Hospital in London.

Approximately 75 per cent of my patients have a bowel disorder. In addition to diagnostic and screening colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy for patients with suspected colorectal cancer, I also perform gastroscopy and laparoscopic gall bladder surgery.

At the Royal Free, I work in close co-operation with a team of surgeons and oncologists treating approximately 120 new colorectal cancers every year and am able to offer restorative surgery to many patients with rectal cancer without the need for a permanent colostomy.

During my career I have published and presented on a variety of conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, liver tumours and rectal prolapse.
