Mr Duraisamy Ravichandran

Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in Breast and Endocrine

MBBS, FRCS, PhD

Specialises in

I have been a Consultant Surgeon for the past 17 years. I have a very busy clinical practice in breast and endocrine surgery. I see patients with benign breast problems and breast cancer in my “one-stop” breast clinic at Spire Harpenden where I see patients and perform all the necessary investigations such as mammograms, ultrasound and needle biopsies on the same visit. The results of the mammogram and ultrasound are available to the patient immediately and biopsy results are available in a few days. I perform benign breast surgery and breast cancer surgery including immediate breast reconstructions. I am a member of the Association of Breast Surgery, UK.

I also see patients with thyroid lumps and parathyroid disease. I perform surgery for benign thyroid problems such as thyrotoxicosis (over-active thyroid) and thyroid cancer. I am also an experienced parathyroid surgeon and I submit my thyroid and parathyroid surgical results to the national audit by British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons.

I also see patients with hernias and other general surgical problems. I do not perform key-hole (laparoscopic) surgery.

I am the Clinical Director of Breast Surgery at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and the Lead Surgeon for the Beds and Herts Breast Screening Centre, one of the largest in the country. I examine the final year medical students qualifying as doctors. I am also an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons for the MRCS examination and the FRCS (intercollegiate) exit examination for the newly qualifying consultants. I am a teacher and a trainer, and educational and clinical supervisor for the junior doctors at my hospital. I am also an appraiser for other consultants.
