I trained in cardiology at the Royal Free Hospital, the National Heart Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary. I have continued my training during a further 21 years in the real world as a consultant in Welwyn Garden City.

I have been careful to keep up to date in cardiology by attending the weekly clinical meetings at Harefield Hospital, through my membership of the British and European Cardical Societies, and as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. I manage to attend my fair share of national and international meetings in my field.

Since I was a student, clinical cardiology has been my abiding passion. I have managed to carry out sufficient research and audit along the line, and although these activities provide mental challenge and professional discipline, the hands-on care of the ill patient has always been my main interest.

I was a "founder member" of the staff at Spire Harpenden Hospital from its opening, have sat on the Medical Advisory and Ethical Committees, and have maintained a close interest in the Health Screening Centre at Spire Harpenden Hospital, where I report on the ECGs.

After many moves during the course of my training, we have now lived in St Albans for 21 years, and feel settled and happy here. Our daughters were educated locally, and although now grown up, continue to live and work nearby.

Interests outside medicine include personal survival and maintenance of sanity! I achieve this through music, opera and theatre going, history in general and art history in particular.

I also enjoy travel. I have been a member of the Apothecaries Livery Company and a Freeman of the City of London for many years. I am a life member of Glyndebourne and a Benefactor of my Cambridge College.
