I mainly deal with symptom management issues relating to cancer and chronic non-cancer illness, which are incurable. I take a ‘total’ approach to patient centred care, looking at the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimension of illness and seek to address these issues as best I can within a consultation. My work often involves dealing with difficult ethical issues such as artificial feeding and drinking, sedation and issues around end of life care.
I qualified as a ‘mature’ student, doing my pre-clinical training at St Andrew’s University, Fife, followed by my clinical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London. I initially qualified as a GP in Bournemouth. I then worked for over two years in Psychiatry in Poole, Dorset. I then decided to pursue palliative medicine as a career. I did my specialist training as a registrar in the West Midlands, working mostly around Warwickshire. I completed my training to become a consultant in palliative medicine in Sept 2007. After various locums, I took up my first consultant post in Luton, based both in the community and hospital.
I am a practicing Christian and attend an evangelical CoE church in Barnet, London.I am preparing to run the Virgin London Marathon to raise money for Keech Hospice Care, Luton.I also enjoy playing squash, eating out and cinema.
