Non-surgical treatment for Dupuytren's at Spire Murrayfield Hospital

Non-surgical treatment for Dupuytren's is now available at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals. The treatment involves a collagenase enzyme injection administered to the affected area by a specialist consultant. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mrs Domenique Davidson offers collagenase injection for Dupuytren's at Spire Murrayfield Hospital and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Chris Oliver offers it at Shawfair Park Hospital in Edinburgh.

What is Dupuytren's contracture?

Dupuytren's contracture is a fixed flexion contracture of the hand where the fingers bend towards the palm and cannot be fully extended (straightened).

The traditional surgical treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture is called palmar fasciectomy. It involves removal of a section of the tissue (the fascia) under the skin on the palm of the hand. The operation is either performed as a day-case, or will involve one night’s stay in hospital.

Collagenase enzyme injection treatment for Dupuytren's

Collagenase enzyme injection is a new, non-surgical treatment for dupuytren’s contracture. It involves injection of collagenase enzyme into the Dupuytren’s cord in the hand.

This non-surgical pharmacological treatment offers patients the convenience of an out-patient procedure and avoidance of invasive complicated surgery.

24 hours after the injection, patients return to clinic for the release procedure, which involves breaking the cord and finger extension. If unsuccessful after the first treatment it can be administered up to three times per cord at four week intervals.
