Mrs Dominique Davidson

Consultant Hand Surgeon

BA, MA, BMBCh, FRCS (Plas), DPhil.

Specialises in

  • Hand and wrist surgery
  • Dupuytren's disease
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Arthritis
  • Tendon problems

My medical training took place in Oxford, where I received first class honours. I subsequently underwent full training in plastic and reconstructive surgery in London, but returned to Oxford University to complete a DPhil into the genetic basis of hand deformities, for which I was awarded a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons.

At an early stage in my training, I elected to concentrate on hand surgery and undertook a fellowship at the prestigious Windsor Hand Clinic.

My first consultant post was in the Canniesburn Unit of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. However, in 2005 I was invited to move east, to take up the position of Lead Hand Surgeon of the Lothian Regional Hand Service, primarily based at St John’s Hospital, but also providing emergency cover for the Sick Children’s Hospital.

My NHS practice covers all aspects of hand and wrist surgery, as does my Spire private practice.

Throughout my career I have been extensively involved in research, resulting in many prizes and publications in peer-reviewed journals. I am involved in longstanding scientific collaborations with the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford into the development of new treatments for Dupuytren’s disease, which is my particular area of expertise. I was lead investigator in Edinburgh for the recently published RIDD trial investigating the use of anti-TNF injections (adalimumab) in the treatment of early Dupuytren’s disease.

I act as an examiner for the British Hand Surgery Diploma. I also teach and lecture widely, hoping to share with others the intricacies of the hand. As I often find myself telling patients, all hands are beautiful inside-which makes mine a particularly enjoyable job.

I have a major scientific and clinical research interest in Dupuytren's disease, and am involved in several UK-wide projects, including the development of cutting-edge new treatments. Other areas of research include thumb-base arthritis, hand anatomy and wrist pathology. I have published widely on these and many other areas in peer-reviewed journals.

Lead Consultant Hand Surgeon, Lothian regional hand services

In the midst of an enjoyable surgical career in England, I had the fortune of meeting and marrying a Scot. Now an honorary Edinburghian, albeit of Irish descent, I am doing my best to bring up three children in the tartan tradition. Unfortunately, old habits die hard - the house is split during the Six Nations.
