John Murie graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1975. He trained in various Glasgow teaching hospitals. In 1984 he was appointed Consultant Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, and Clinical Reader in Surgery at the University of Oxford. These posts involved vascular, transplant and general surgery. In 1989 he was appointed Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he has been head of department since 2000. He has authored over 150 scientific papers, mostly on vascular surgical topics.

Mr Murie has represented Scotland on the Councils of both the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland and the Vascular Surgical Society. He is also a past Member of Council of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. He has had an interest in surgical publishing since 1989 when he was appointed Associate Editor of the British Journal of Surgery (BJS), one of the world's top two general surgical journals. Mr Murie has been Editor-in-Chief of BJS since 2002.
