I was appointed to the staff at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Murrayfield Hospital in 2003. I am a specialist hip and knee surgeon with particular expertise in difficult joint replacement surgery, and musculoskeletal oncology surgery.

I’ve trained on the Stryker Mako robotic arm technology in both Australia and Germany. I believe the robot will have a major effect on partial knee replacements. Using the robotic arm means I can personalise every operation to suit each of my patients, and make alterations mid-operation that couldn’t be made using previous surgical methods.

I live in the South of Edinburgh with my wife and five children.

Mr James (Sam) Patton is Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals. As such, his role is to provide senior professional advice to the Hospital Director and Director of Clinical Services in order to support effective medical governance and oversight. He is paid £14,000 per annum for this role and is also entitled to receive the following fees for the provision of additional ad hoc services: (i) £750 for chairing a Professional Review Committee; (ii) £500 for each annual medical appraisal undertaken for a doctor designating to Spire for the purposes of revalidation; and (iii) £200 per hour for the preparation of an independent report (up to a maximum of £500 per report) upon request by the Medical Director or Chief Medical Officer.
