Specialises in

  • Back and neck pain
  • Facial pain especially trigeminal neuralgia
  • Pain management
  • Lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine disorders

As a neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon I deal with adult and paediatric patients with brain and spine problems.

A special interest of mine is the spine, having received further specialised training in both simple and complex spinal procedures as well as minimally invasive spine surgery. My aim is to treat these conditions non-operatively as far as possible. To this effect I have supplemented my training with post-specialisation fellowships in both neurosurgical and orthopaedic centres, both in the UK and abroad, thus obtaining a unique perspective on treatment options and techniques.

Another particular interest of my routine practice is trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain), and I have set up and have been running a trigeminal neuralgia Clinic as part of my NHS practice. Both non-surgical or minimally invasive procedures can provide excellent pain relief, and this is tailored to the individual patient.

I also deal with patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve compression, and other peripheral nerve disorders.

After graduating from Cambridge, I completed my Basic Surgical Training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. After obtaining Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh, I entered the Higher Surgical Training programme on the prestigious South London circuit and trained as a Senior Registrar at King’s College Hospital, St George’s Hospital, and Brighton/Sussex University Hospitals. I then completed fellowships in skull base surgery in Tokyo; Neurosurgical Spine in Munich; Orthopaedic Spine in Oxford.

I am currently a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh; and the Chairman of the Young Neurosurgeons Committee, and the Individual Membership Committee, of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies.
