Background Information
Professional profile:

I am clinical lead for gynaecology in Lothian and take a lead role in ensuring standards of care and development of the service. I co-chair the gynaecology quality improvement programme for NHS Lothian. I aim to provide the highest standard of evidence-based care for all my patients. I give my patients my personal mobile phone number so that they can contact me directly.

I have developed a special interest in the treatment of heavy painful periods and pelvic pain. I offer laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis (ablation and resection) and I run a pelvic pain clinic, which has been established for more than 12 years in Lothian. I am involved in endometriosis research and audit and regularly attend the World Congress on Endometriosis, being a member of the World Endometriosis Society.

I specialise in the investigation and treatment of heavy and irregular periods. To investigate abnormal bleeding (including post-menopausal bleeding) I perform diagnostic hysteroscopy to visualise the inside of the womb. I offer a number of different treatments for heavy and irregular periods, including the use of the Mirena System, Novasure and Thermachoice endometrial ablation, and for those wishing to retain their fertility I perform hysteroscopic resection of intrauterine fibroids. I now offer laparoscopic hysterectomy as an alternative to abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy which reduces hospital stay, recovery time and scarring. I also perform laparoscopic removal of ovaries for women at increased risk of breast or ovarian cancer. For those women who develop prolapse I offer treatments with physiotherapy, pessaries or vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair.

I am Hon Treasurer of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) in London. I contribute nationally to the development of sexual and reproductive health services and the continuing education and development of those wishing to practice sexual and reproductive healthcare in the UK. I have recently taken a lead role in the introduction of the e-Diploma, which is used by General Practitioners and trainees to gain the diploma in sexual and reproductive health and to keep up-to-date.  I have also recently helped to develop the curriculum for higher specialty training in this discipline.

Personal profile:
I enjoy spending time with my family. We regularly play golf, tennis and squash. We all enjoy travelling and holidaying in the sunshine. I have entered the BUPA 10k Run for the first time in 2010, never having run anywhere in my life, and am determined to raise cash for Alzheimer's Scotland.
