Background Information 
Professional profile:
I am a specialist in Genito-Urinary Oncology and run a large practice offering non-surgical treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy for Urological Cancer patients. I have a particular interest in Prostate Brachytherapy (seeds). Edinburgh was the first Scottish Centre to offer this treatment in 2001. A business plan for 2009 is in place to deliver high dose rate Prostate Brachytherapy for high-risk prostate cancer. I can offer dose-escalated radiotherapy with IMRT for prostate cancer and conformal radiotherapy for bladder cancer. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is routinely used before surgery or radiotherapy for bladder cancer.

I have experience in the use of the new drugs available for kidney cancer and Taxotere chemotherapy for prostate cancer. I am team leader for Urological cancer trials with in the SE of Scotland and through this activity allow patients access to the latest areas of clinical research.

I have a very exciting on-going collaboration with the University of Edinburgh Department of Electrical Engineering and Nano Technology to develop a micro chip system to provide real time measurements of tumour oxygen levels. In time we hope to implant this device directly into tumours within the prostate and individualise radiotherapy treatments by timing radiotherapy delivery with peak oxygen levels within the tumour.
Personal profile:
Undergraduate training at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London from 1983-1989. I also undertook an intercalated BSc in Clinical Science and gained First Class Honours. General Medical training at Queens University Hospital Nottingham. Specialist cancer training at Velindre Cancer Hospital Cardiff. Clinical Fellowship specialising in GU oncology at the British Columbia Cancer Agency, Vancouver. Appointed as Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre in 1998.

I am married with two children and a dog and stay in East Lothian. I enjoy playing as much golf and supporting as much rugby as time allows.
