Consultant Gynaecologist Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Honorary Senior Lecturer University of Edinburgh
After graduating 1992 and achieving an MB ChB and BMed Biol with honours, I was awarded a prestigious Medical Research Council Fellowship and gained an MD (Doctor of Medicine) in reproductive medicine. I went on to receive a commendation in my Membership to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. During a sub-speciality training programme I achieved subspecialist status in gynaecological cancer surgery.
I am currently a Consultant Gynaecologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. I am committed to patient care and have focused my clinical skills on the development of keyhole operative gynaecological procedures. Consultant colleagues nationally refer complicated patients to my clinics. As a gynaecological oncologist, I operate on the most difficult surgical cancer cases which also allows me a consistent, precise surgical service to my patients with benign disease such as endometriosis and heavy periods.
My main clinical interest is Laparoscopic Keyhole surgery. I am currently pioneering the development of single incision laparoscopic ‘scarless’ surgery (SILS) and have performed more procedures than any other gynaecologists in the UK. It is possible to perform total hysterectomies through the tummy button. Other techniques including the very latest in advanced technology have allowed me to offer increasingly difficult operations with a better and safer outcome than previously achieved. Many of the treatments I offer can be performed as day procedures to allow a swift return to normal activity.
