Mike Blair, Scotland and Edinburgh Rugby Captain and British & Irish Lions squad member, talks about his experience at our Health Assessment Centre.
"Getting a health assessment done was something I’d been thinking about for a while. I spoke to the team doctor and physio and thought it would be a good thing to do. I’d never had one done before and I think it just clears your mind. For me it was just really to get a bit of peace of mind, to get a clean bill of health.

"The whole assessment was really efficient, it took about 1½ to 2 hours. I first met a health advisor and had a series of tests- blood tests, blood pressure and cardiogram. My eyes and my hearing were checked and my body fat percentage and lung output.
"Then I talked through all of this with the health advisor and saw the doctor who talked through my questionnaire and family history and lifestyle. You get given a range of different bands you fit into and given advice on any risk areas.
"I think it’s different for different people you know, some people are really relaxed about their health but I sometimes worry about things. I think I’ll probably have one of these assessments every five years or so just to get that clean bill of health, and like I said, for me it’s just peace of mind. I’m quite fortunate as I have contact with a fulltime physio and doctor through my rugby, but for those other tests like blood tests and heart- those things I was keen to have done.
"Overall it was really reassuring. It’s great to get positive feedback and know that you have that clean bill of health, that you’re fine, doing the right things and leading a health lifestyle. And on the flipside, if you were someone who possibly wasn’t doing the right things and you need to be told which directions you need to be going then it would be really valuable."
