What is BPH?
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition of the prostate gland, which affects more than half of all men over the age of 60 and almost 80% of those aged 80 years and older.
The condition is caused by a natural overgrowth of cells in the male prostate gland, with the resulting enlargement placing pressure on the urethra. Symptoms range from frequent urination, especially at night, to weak urine flow and a burning sensation during urination.
What treatments are available?
Traditional treatment of an enlarged prostate gland is a procedure called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which seeks to remove enlarged prostate tissue by invasive means. Ever at the forefront of medical advances however, Spire Murrayfield is now the first health care provider in Scotland to offer a revolutionary new treatment for sufferers of BPH – Green Light Laser Therapy.
What is Green Light?
Green Light Laser Therapy offers patients a minimally invasive treatment with a lower risk of side effects. Using laser energy to remove enlarged prostate tissue, Green Light Therapy offers a definitive long-lasting solution for patients with BPH.
What are the benefits of Green Light?
Spire Murrayfield Consultant Urologist, Antony Riddick says, “Green Light Laser prostatectomy is an excellent and very safe alternative to traditional transurethral resection of the prostate.”
The benefits of this revolutionary treatment are great, with “minimal bleeding at surgery, meaning that patients require a shorter length of catheterisation (overnight, or in some cases removal of catheter a few hours after surgery), so length of stay is greatly reduced and blood transfusion occurrence is very rare.” In addition, “return to work is quicker and there is only a very low risk of loss of sexual potency.”
With some patients returning home a few short hours after the procedure, returning to normal non-strenuous activities within days, it’s easy to see why over 250,000 patients worldwide have chosen Green Light Laser Therapy.
