If would like to reduce facial scars, blemishes or certain skin conditions, intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) can provide an effective treatment. IPL can be used to treat acne scars and scarring due to injuries. It can also be used to treat rosacea, port wine stains, sun damage, age spots and other blemishes.

About the intense pulsed light procedure
IPL works by emitting a range of different wavelengths in each pulse of light. These target areas in the skin which are different in colour to the surrounding tissue, such as scars, freckles, some birthmarks and other areas of pigmented skin.
Your specialist will focus the intense pulsed light onto the area around the scar or blemish to be treated. IPL targets the lower levels of skin (dermis) without affecting the upper levels (epidermis) which means that any peeling and recovery time is normally reduced.
Treatment sessions usually last around 20 minutes, and you can usually return home immediately after treatment. A course of four to six treatments may be required to achieve the desired results.
As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important that you review your expectations thoroughly before you decide to proceed. Your specialist will explain the results you can expect and will discuss the associated risks and alternatives to the procedure before going ahead.
When you receive IPL treatment at Spire you will have the procedure performed by an experienced specialist in the safe and comfortable surroundings of a private hospital.
