I am a consultant ophthalmic surgeon based at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Huntingdon where I head up the glaucoma specialist service in one of the best equipped and subspecialised units in the country. I am also an honorary consultant at Addenbrooke’s Cambridge where I also teach. I trained in London and Oxford. My subspecialty ophthalmology training was at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

In addition to general ophthalmology that includes cataract surgery, my subspecialty interest is glaucoma, which was developed through two Glaucoma Fellowships, one in a leading glaucoma institution of the USA (with Prof Weinreb, University of California San Diego) and another most recently at Moorfields. I have published extensively on the epidemiology of glaucoma, detection of glaucoma, glaucoma progression, and the epidemiology of eye disease.

I also have interests in research and community ophthalmology, in particular a community glaucoma scheme which involves optometrists and GPs.

I enjoy travelling and experiencing other cultures. While at medical school I travelled alone in Russia and China. I also work at the International Centre for Eye Health coordinating several surveys, most notably the Bangladesh and Pakistan National Eye Surveys. Fellow of the RGS for many years (ex-chair: Young Fellows’ Committee). I lecture and write on Expedition Medicine and was Expedition Doctor (and summiteer!) for 2nd British Ascent of three highest Arctic Peaks. I am a keen sportsman.

Other interests include history, French, Russian and photography. My wife is a General Practitioner and we have two boys- another full-time occupation!
