Background Information 
Professional profile:
Appointed November 1995 as consultant in the Department of Neurosurgery with a special interest in spinal neurosurgery. Undergraduate training in Cambridge and subsequently at The London (now Royal) but still in the East End. Subsequent postgraduate training took me to Oxford, Bristol, Sheffield and Cambridge. In the six months leading up to my appointment I took up a fellowship in spinal neurosurgery and worked at the Walton Centre and Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool. Spinal surgery is undergoing a period of rapid development. This is due to a combination of more accurate diagnosis using MRI and CT scanning and improved surgical techniques, instruments and implants. My research interest revolves around establishing mechanisms for measuring the effectiveness of surgical treatment of spinal disorders. I am closely involved with training other surgeons both in my capacity as director of higher surgical training in Neurosurgery in the Anglian region and as a course convenor for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine masterclass at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
