Background Information
Professional profile:

Dr Clarke is a general cardiologist with special interest in interventional cardiology. Having graduated from the University of Cambridge she undertook cardiology training and research in Cambridge. She was awarded a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the world renowned Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, Boston, USA, before taking up her Consultants post in Cambridge UK in 2002.

Dr Clarke was appointed Clinical Director for Cardiac Services in 2006 and has developed and introduced key initiatives including a one-stop diagnostic service ‘Papworth Direct’ and primary angioplasty- stenting for acute heart attack patients. Through her lead role at the SHA she has overseen the role out of the heart attack service to the East of England. She has also overseen a restructuring of the Directorate to improve engagement and performance of the Directorate in what is an increasingly challenging climate in the NHS.

Dr Clarke was elected to Vice President of Education and Research at the British Cardiovascular Society in 2011. Honoured to hold this position she is also the first female officer of the Society. Her role is to deliver the Annual Conference for members (trainee and trained cardiologists and allied professionals) and develop and implement the education and research strategy of the Society. Education for the revalidation of doctors will become increasingly important in years ahead.

Personal profile:

Dr Clarke covers all aspects of General Cardiology including chest pain/angina, murmur/valve disease, palpitation/arrhythmia, shortness of breath/heart failure and high blood pressure/hypertension, dizziness/syncope, women with heart disease and screening.

Dr Clarke undertakes non-invasive investigation including ECG, echocardiography, exercise treadmill testing, heart rhythm/holter recorders and blood pressure recorders. She can arrange TILT testing and radiology investigations including MRI and CT, stress echocardiography, nuclear medicine (MIBI), and lung function testing.

Dr Clarkes’ subspecialty interest is interventional cardiology including both acute and elective cases. She has extensive experience and is a high volume operator with exemplary outcomes. She undertakes complex cases including chronically occluded arteries and heavily calcified arteries (often treated with a device known as a rotablator). She uses all different modalities of assessment of coronary narrowings including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and pressure wire.
