Are you suffering from a bloated uncomfotable tummy? Do you have an embarrasing noisy stomach in meetings at work, or abdominal pain and change in bowel habit?
IBS is caused by an increase in sensitivity in the bowel that makes patients more aware of their normal bowel activity, which causes discomfort, bloating and pain. It also upsets the bowel function resulting in constipation, diarrhoea or a combination of these. IBS can develop after an infection, such as food poisoning or traveller’s diarrhoea. It may also develop as a result of stress or after treatment with antibiotics.
"Even though it is often not possible to find the precise cause of IBS, we can often find a very effective treatment"
Dr Stephen Middleton
Many patients find that the symptoms of IBS can occur during stressful times at work and this can be very inconvenient especially when meeting with others. Patients often report that their IBS symptoms interfere with their ability to hold meetings at work, and high pressure board room meetings can be particularly difficult, with a noisy grumbling tummy.
The IBS Service at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital is supported by a wide range of special investigations and treatments. These include biofeedback for bowel retraining which is also very successful in treating other functional bowel problems such as constipation and evacuatory problems. Hydrogen breath testing for bacterial overgrowth, which has been found to be quite common in IBS patients, is also available. These additional services have been introduced and are supervised by Dr Stephen Middleton, who also directs the Cambridge IBS and functional bowel disorder services at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and has extensive experience in the treatment of IBS. Dr Middleton believes that dietary treatment of IBS is much better than drug treatment and a recent audit of dietary treatment in Cambridge found a success rate of 79%. Once the IBS symptoms resolve most patients can reintroduce the majority of foods back into the diet so thait is well balanced and healthy.
